Questions
How do you know my time zone?
Your browser reports the IANA time zone your device is set to (for example America/Chicago). Nothing is looked up from your IP address and nothing is sent anywhere.
Why could the answer be wrong?
It shows your device setting. If you are travelling and your phone or laptop has not updated, or automatic time zone is switched off, it will show the old zone. Fix it in your system date and time settings.
What is the difference between a time zone and an offset?
An offset is a number, like UTC−5. A time zone such as America/New_York is a set of rules that says which offset applies on which dates, including daylight saving time and past changes.
